10 Do-it-Yourself Car Repairs

1. Replace your windshield wiper blades: If you notice your wiper blades streaking or chattering across the windshield, replace them. Simply follow the installation instructions on the packaging.
2. Replace burned-out headlights: When one headlight goes out, it’s wise to replace them both. The most important tip is to never touch the headlight with your bare hands. The oil from your skin can create a hot spot that damages the bulb.
3. Replace a blown fuse: Check your owner’s manual for the fuse box location. Then, replace the blown fuse with a new one of the proper amperage.
4. Lubricate dragging window tracks: If your automatic windows are sluggish, lubricate the tracks with silicone or dry Teflon spray lubricant. This trick can save you hundreds of dollars on window regulator repair.
5. Swap out brake fluid: You may not be able to flush the brake fluid, but swapping it out is the next best thing. First, suck out the old fluid with a turkey baster. Then, refill the reservoir with fresh brake fluid. Repeat several times over the next few weeks until the fluid retains a light honey color.
6. Change the power steering fluid: Follow the turkey baster method outlined above to remove the old power steering fluid. (Use a different baster to avoid contamination.) Refill and reservoir with fresh fluid and let the engine run for 15 seconds. Turn the car back off and repeat this fluid swap until you’ve used up a full quart.
7. Replace the cabin air filter: Remove the access covers, slide out the old filter, and install the new one.
8. Fix upholstery tears: Vinyl and leather seat patches make it easy to repair your torn seats without the high cost an upholstery shop will charge you.
9. Change a flat tire: Everyone should know how to change a flat. Luckily, the job is easy with a car jack, lug wrench, and new tire.
10. Add a window coating: A simple glass treatment product can significantly improve visibility in bad weather. To apply, simply clean the windshield and allow the glass to dry. Then, wipe the windshield treatment onto the glass and wipe it back off again. Repeat with a second coat, and you’re all set!
